Bob Stokes’ 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442

I have owned my 442 since 1970. I’m the second owner and I bought the car from one of my high school friends. He was the drummer from a band called the “Count Five” that produced the hit song “Psychotic Reaction” that topped the charts in the late 60’s. When the band went on tour in the US, “Butch” (the drummer) and the lead singer Ken purchased new ’67 442’s because they wanted reliable cars that were big enough to carry their equipment. I purchased the car from Butch after the band tours were over in 1970. The car was my daily driver for 15 years and when gas prices made it uneconomical to drive the car daily, I decided to restore and make upgrades to the car for safety and performance reasons. The original 400 CI big block and Muncie M21 Four Speed have remained in the car. The engine has been bored, balanced and blueprinted and puts out 425HP and 470 Lbs/Ft of torque. The original 10 bolt rear end has been replaced with a 12 bolt “posi” with 3:73 gears. As many of us car guys know, our “pride and joys” are never finished. Mine is no exception. I am still “tinkering/improving” my 442 today. I’m in the process of performing a complete QA1 front suspension upgrade and converting to Wilwood disc brakes front and rear. The car is a blast to drive and should even better when it’s back on the road this summer. Bob Stokes
