Ken Hower’s 1950 Chevy 3100 Pickup

I bought this 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup, just a beater for hauling things around town as we no longer had a pickup to use since my son’s ’78 El Camino was totaled in a freeway pile up.  I just wanted an old truck, but figured I’d look for a classic as to hold it’s value and just the coolness of them unrestored.  Found this old girl out in Fontana, CA.

Robin, my wife, was against buying another vehicle as we already had 5 classic cars and our drivers, too.  In fact, she was pretty mad when her Dad and I left to go look at the truck.  Nonetheless, I bought the truck and had it it flatbedded home.  When it arrived, it wasn’t even off the hauler when she proclaimed her love for this truck, and that this was going to be hers… she loved it!  We left the truck as is for several years, as all loved the old patinaed look.  All wanted it to be clear coated… but there was too much going on under all that cool patina.

So this past year we had the truck painted a kelly green with black interior, a custom bench seat, with some custom 6 lug artillery rims powder coated black.  The truck has its original 235 cu. in. inline 6 motor.  The transmission had been switched out from a three on the tree with a four on the floor with a granny first gear that could pull a house off its foundation, it is geared so low. Only drawback is  55 – 60 mph is top speed in this old girl… but Robin uses it for her around town running.  She named her Bertha Butt.  We both just love the truck and will be in our family for a very long time.  – Ken Hower
