Back in August we reported championship-winning racer Sammy Swindell’s announcement that he was retiring from winged sprint car racing, and would henceforth be racing only in the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals every January in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
At the time Swindell, 59, said that it was a hard decision to make, and evidently the decision has been eating at him, because he has entered the United Sprint Car Series Frostbuster opener scheduled for March 6-7 at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi.
While this race will mark a return to the sprinters by a guy who said he was retiring, it still falls well short of being a return to the grueling World of Outlaws series, which crisscrosses the country each year, racing upwards of 90 times per year. Swindell is a three-time champion of the series, most recently in 1997.
We are not surprised by Swindell’s change of heart – once a racer, always a racer – and it makes sense to us that he might pick and choose some events in which to remain active. But it is yet to be seen how active Swindell will be in 2015.
