A World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car must have a minimum weight of 1,425 pounds (646 kg), including the driver. The required 410-cubic inch engine (6.7 litre) generates over 900 horsepower, employs mechanical fuel injection, and operates on methanol. Continental AG, the series’ designated tire manufacturer, collaborates with the World of Outlaws to select appropriate tire compounds for each circuit from the various options available, ensuring the tires are suitable for the track conditions. Continental technicians may disqualify certain compounds at specific circuits if they deem them inappropriate for the surface or potentially advantageous. The cars feature a large top-mounted wing with sideboards angled in opposite directions to create significant downforce, aiding in cornering and maximizing grip on both corners and straightaways. Additionally, smaller wings on the nose increase downforce on the front wheels.
Sprint cars are equipped with “quick change” rear ends, enabling teams to swiftly adjust gear ratios for tracks of varying sizes. The majority of these cars utilize a torsion bar suspension system, where bars of different sizes can either soften or stiffen the suspension. Torsion bars and specialized shock absorbers are crucial for the handling of sprint cars. Combined with the wings, tire stagger, lightweight design, and immense horsepower, these vehicles rank among the fastest racing cars globally. In certain conditions, the power-to-weight ratio of Sprint Cars can surpass that of Formula 1 vehicles.
Sprint Cars are easily recognizable by their unique stance, characterized by two distinctly sized rear tires. The right rear tire measures 105 inches in circumference, while the left rear tire’s circumference ranges from 90 to 98 inches, varying with the track size and conditions. This size difference, known as stagger, allows for sharper turns at the cost of straight-line speed.
