The Greater Merrimack Valley Vintage and Classic Car Showcase featuring the Great Race will have the street of Downtown Lowell bustling on Saturday June 21st beginning at 11:00am through 8:00pm. The Great Race is a national road rally of 100 vintage cars ranging from 1914 to 1970. All vehicles are prohibited from using GPS devices and must take a predetermined route to arrive at each destination at a specific time. All cars will be docked a point for each minute they arrive too early or late. The race, which takes a different route each year, is in its 31st year and in 2014 race route begins in Ogunquit, ME on Saturday June 21st and ends in The Villages, FL on Sunday June 29th with their first overnight stop in Lowell, MA on Saturday June 21st. Opening ceremonies for the Great Race will begin at 4:45pm on Middle Street with the first car scheduled to arrive at 5:00pm. The 100 Great Race vehicles will be on display on Middle Street until 8:00pm for the public to view and take photos with. Beginning at 11:00am, we will be hosting a Classic Car Show featuring up to 400 classic cars from the New England area in 3 parking lots in the downtown footprint, a Cruisin’ on Merrimack Street, a Vendor area featuring all things vintage at Lucy Larcom Park . Be sure to bring the kids, as there will be a Kids’ Area with games, face painting, balloon animals, Cruisin’ Lowla temporary tattoos and even a special appearance by Lowla herself! Don’t forget the camera at home, the Touch a Truck area in the Enterprise Lot on Middle Street will have an antique jeep, a fire truck, an ambulance and more that kids can sit inside and take photos with.
