However, it is well worth seeing for any car enthusiast during this period, particularly from a vantage point near the Cannery Row Monument. The reason is that it is a classic gathering of cars and kids young and old as epitomized in books, movies like American Graffiti, and in neighborhood lore around the country that is apparently still alive and well in Monterey. On Friday and Saturday nights during Monterey Car Week (and probably other times of the year as well) the busy downtown tourist scene undergoes an interesting transition. Vacationing pedestrian hordes are replaced by the colorful paint, gleaming chrome, and muffled rumbles and roars of old and new vehicles slow-cruising along Cannery Row. This see-and-be-seen rolling party is a time-honored tradition that is not as prevalent as it was in earlier periods across the country. It provides an enjoyable contrast to the high-end machines that dominate the nearby landscape during Monterey Car Week. This visceral experience will transport even the most casual onlooker back in time to the feeling of enjoying the ability to at least briefly escape school and work routines in such a typically American fashion.
